Add A Raised Flowerbed Filled With Mums On Your Commercial Property

by Nicholas Jenkins

If you will be planting mums this fall in a raised flowerbed that is located in the front of your business, enhance the colorful fall flowers by using small decorative rocks to create an outline around each one. If your business is open during hours when it is dark outside, add drop lights near the raised bed so that patrons can enjoy the decorative bed that you constructed.

Supplies You Will Need

  • concrete blocks or paving stones
  • tape measure
  • soil
  • shovel
  • hand trowel
  • mums
  • hose
  • watering can
  • decorative rocks
  • drop lights
  • park bench
  • patio set

Create A Raised Bed

Choose a section of property that is flat, drains well, and that will be in the direct view of your clients. Use concrete blocks or paving stones to create an outline for the raised bed. Leave plenty of space in the central part of the bed so that you will be able to plant several mums. Use a shovel to add soil to the center of the outline. Soil that is purchased from a landscaping business will likely contain fertilizer and nutrients that will help the mum's remain hardy. After filling in the outline, use a hand trowel to spread the soil out evenly across the center of the bed.

Plant Mums And Use Decorative Rocks To Surround Them

Purchase mum plants that contain healthy stems and leaves and that have several buds secured to the ends of the stems. Dig small holes in the raised bed and insert the base of each plant in a hole. Add soil to the holes and use a spade or trowel to press the soil down that surrounds the mum plants. Fill a watering can with cool water and disperse the water around the bottoms of the plants. Place a row of decorative rocks around each plant. The rocks will stabilize soil that surrounds the mum plants and will add dimension to the raised flowerbed.

Add Lights And An Area For Customers To View The Addition

After installing drop lights near the flowerbed, create an outdoor viewing area for your customers. Either a park bench or patio set will provide patrons with an area to relax prior to going into your business or after leaving the establishment. While sitting on the furnishings, people will be inclined to view the mums and colorful rocks that you added to the bed. Maintain the new landscape feature and furnishings by watering mum plants at regular intervals and wiping off furniture with soft, soapy cloths on occasion.
