Three Steps To Dealing With Joining Two Condos Into One

by Nicholas Jenkins

Sometimes, one condominium isn't enough space. If you want to live in the very center of the city, you may need to purchase another condominium. Condominiums come along with a number of perks, including pools, common areas, child play areas, and more, depending on the apartment unit. Depending on the building that you wish to live in, you will be bound by the amount of square footage that the condo units offer. If you wish to have a larger unit within a particular building you can purchase two units and turn them into one mega condo. If you are going to do this, here are three things that you need to prepare:

Get the condo to approve and change the plans

If you wish to purchase two units and knock down walls to make them one unit, you should first get approval from the condo board. The board will need to approve any changes that extend to the walls of the units and the makeup of the building. The condo board will need to know that you are technically occupying two units so that they can change the budget if they collect for each unit. If it is ok with the condo board, the builder will also need to be notified. The plans of the building will need to be changed to show to future building owners.

Hire a renovation contractor

Determining how to knock down walls is a job for a seasoned professional. Once you open up the condos, you will also have two of everything, including two kitchens, two living rooms, double the restrooms, and double the bathrooms. Your renovation contractor will need to come up with new plans for the layout of your home. This includes entrances, bedroom layouts, and changes to the wall structures.

Stick to one or two rooms

One of the hardest things that you will have to do during your complete condo reno is to stay out of the way. In order to get the job done as quickly as possible, allow the construction firm to work as much as possible. Cordon yourself and your family off to one or two room and a bathroom. This may mean that you use a mini refrigerator inside of one of the rooms and move a microwave in your room to prepare food. Though be constrained to one or two rooms, this will keep you safe and make sure that your condo can be completed quickly.
